Toilet makeover with Mineral Paint

From tile wall to quiet concrete look, without chopping and breaking

An existing toilet room with wall tiles need not be a limitation to a new look. With proper preparation and construction, you can easily transform tiles into a clean, even wall with a concrete-look finish. With Mineral Paint, you can create a calm, natural look that fits well in modern restrooms without having to remove tiles.

Below we explain step by step how to prepare and finish a tile wall with Mineral Paint.

Step-by-step method

1. Degrease tile substrate

Always start with a clean surface. Degrease tiles thoroughly so products can adhere well.
For example, use:
Alabastine - Universal Degreaser

Allow the wall to dry completely before continuing.

2. Prime

Apply an adhesive primer for closed substrates. This ensures good adhesion of the leveling layers.
Alabastine - Primer Adhesion

Allow the primer to dry according to the package directions.

3. Fill joints (optional)

If you want to make the wall as thick as possible beforehand, you can first fill the joints with wall filler:
Alabastine - Superior Wall Filler

Do not just fill the joints, but also include part of the tile. This will prevent the grout from remaining visible later.
If the surface is still not tight enough after drying, sand it well flat before continuing.

4. Leveling with moisture-resistant leveling paste

Use Alabastine Muurglad Vochtbestendig to completely level the wall:
Alabastine - Wall Smooth Moisture-Resistant

- If you have not used a wall filler: apply 2 coats of Wall Smooth

- If you did use wall filler: 1 coat of Wall Smooth is usually sufficient.

Apply the product with a trowel.
After complete drying, sand the wall flat with sanding grit 80. Preferably by machine for the most even result.

5. Mineral Primer

Apply 1 coat of Mineral Primer with a roller.
This layer ensures optimum adhesion between the level wall and the Mineral Paint.

6. Mineral Paint

Apply 2 coats of Mineral Paint with a block brush.
Work in gentle strokes for a natural, concrete-like look.

7. Optional: light sanding

Want a smoother, more concrete ciré-like effect?
Then lightly sand the final coat of paint with 220-grit sandpaper once it is completely dry.

8. Finishing with coating

Finish the wall with Coating 1K (1 coat, with roller or block brush).
This makes the surface more resistant to dirt and moisture and suitable for use in toilet areas.

Notice:
If you have also applied Mineral Paint to the floor in the restroom, then Coating 2K is required.
Suitable for floors, stairs, furniture and other heavily used surfaces, this coating is applied in 2 coats with a roller.

Tip for experienced handyman - alternative leveling:

Want to make the wall completely smooth without seeing the tile structure? Instead of Alabastine Muurglad, you can also use Ardex R1C renovation plaster. This is an all-in-one plaster that allows leveling in one step. The end result is similar, but application requires a little more plastering experience.

Result

With this build-up, you transform a tiled toilet room into a calm, level concrete-look wall with a matte, natural look. Without demolition, but with a durable finish suitable for everyday use.

Tip for floors in restrooms and bathrooms (at your own risk)

Small toilet floors (tiles):

It is best to level the tile floor with Ardex R1C.

Alternative:

You can also level the floor with Alabastine products, as with the walls. This is suitable for small areas, but we do not recommend it for larger areas.

Large surfaces (such as bathroom):

Use professional leveling layers for completely flat results.

Mineral Paint on floors:

Officially, Mineral Paint is not suitable for floors, and use is always at your own risk. Mineral Paint is suitable for stairs, kitchen countertops and other heavily used surfaces, as seen on our site and socials.

Shower corner:

Mineral Paint on the floor in the shower area is not recommended; prefer to use tile or real concrete cire here.

Application of Mineral Paint:

Follow the same steps as for walls. Lightly sand the second coat with 220-grit paper to prevent grainy texture underfoot. Finish with Coating 2K for floors; walls can be finished with 1K or 2K, depending on your preference.
